OMEA Event and Florida Information

OMEA District Band Adjudicated Event

The performance times and itineraries for District Contest are listed below. We requested that Symphonic and Concert Bands perform on Friday evening. Unfortunately, that request wasn’t met and we are all performing on Saturday.

The performance date for all bands is Saturday, March 4th and the event will be held at Westerville South High School. The event is open to the public and there is no admission charge.

What Happens At District?

Each band will perform a prepared concert of 3 pieces for a panel of 3 adjudicators. They will evaluate each band’s performance and will assign a rating (Superior, Excellent, Good, etc.). This portion of the event is open to the public and happens in the school auditorium. Each group will perform one piece selected from a list of required pieces and two chosen by the director. The difficulty of the required selection determines the classification of the performance. Classes are AA, A, B, and C.

Afterwards, the bands will move to the school bandroom and complete a sight-reading evaluation with another adjudicator. The bands will perform a piece of music that neither the students or director has seen. The music chosen for sight-reading is of a lower difficulty level than the pieces chosen for the auditorium performance. Sight-reading is not open to the public and lasts about 20-25 minutes.

After sight-reading we will put our equipment away and wait in the cafeteria for our rating to be posted. The overall rating is determined by averaging the ratings of the 4 adjudicators. No rankings or other awards are given at District Band Contest.

We will load buses and return to school when the ratings are posted.

District Contest is a part of students’ third quarter grade.

Darby Solo and Ensemble Event Recap

Mr. James and I were very pleased with the performances of the students last Thursday at our Solo and Ensemble Event. Over 100 students performed in 10 ensembles, with an additional 13 students performing solos. Our judges provided many great comments. Between this event and OMEA students gave 70 chamber music performances this quarter- congratulations!
