Double-Header Recap

Last Saturday was an absolutely fantastic day for the band! The students were named Grand Champions at both the Athens and Dublin Jerome competitions, and also earned two of the highest scores in school history.

Band members earned 282.1 points at Athens (out of 300). Very few bands in Ohio will score above the 270’s during the season. Right now I’m only aware of 2 others that have done so. That is a tremendous achievement and is a direct result of their hard work all season!

Other awards included:

  • Athens: Overall Best Music, Best Visual, Best General Effect, Best Percussion.
  • Athens: 1st Place Class AA, Best Percussion Class AA, Best Auxiliary Class AA.
  • Athens: Straight Superior Ratings.
  • Dublin Jerome: Overall Best Music, Best Visual, and Best General Effect.
  • Dublin Jerome: 1st Place Class AA, Best Music Class AA, Best Visual Class AA, Best General Effect Class AA.
  • Dublin Jerome: Straight Superior Ratings.

OMEA State Marching Band Finals

As you know, the students earned Superior Ratings at their first four competitions, qualifying them to perform at OMEA State Marching Band Finals here at Darby on October 28th.

Our tentative performance time at State Finals is 8:00p.

Please refer to the Booster Bytes below for information regarding volunteer opportunities for OMEA State Marching Band Finals. We are holding it at Darby for the first time ever and it is vital that we make this event a success! We would like to continue our relationship with SMBF for a long time.

Hosting SMBF provides several important benefits:

  • Saving all three schools a potential drive of up to 2 hours to perform at a different site.
  • Saving the district money on transportation costs.
  • Providing us with a unique fundraising opportunity.
  • Giving our seniors the opportunity to have their final performance in our home stadium!

Thank you in advance for helping to make SMBF a great event for Hilliard!

Skull Session Performance

As the high school football season winds down, we have one additional performance to look forward to: performing at Skull Session with The Ohio State University Marching Band on Saturday, November 11th before the Michigan State game.

The OSUMB asks that we arrive on campus no later than 4 ½ hours before kickoff. We will start playing 3 hours before kickoff, and the OSUMB will start their performance 2 hours 15 minutes before the game. We will also perform 1 or 2 songs for the OSUMB. Skull Session ends 1 hour before kickoff.

Right now the game time is TBD. Keep an eye on the OSU schedule- the time should be announced soon.

  • Concessions Sign-up – We need your help!  We have entered soccer playoffs therefore; we have extra shifts to fill for concessions.  If boys soccer wins today, they will host another playoff game on Saturday evening.  That event has been added to the sign ups in preparation.  We are also light on signups for Thursday’s game and Friday for senior night football.  We would appreciate it if underclass parents could please cover Friday concessions so that the senior parents are free to enjoy an eventful evening.  Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Playoff Soccer on Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday:

Friday Football:

  • The State Marching Band Finals (SMBF) will be held on Saturday October 28th at Hilliard Darby.  This new location is going to require us to increase our volunteer participation as we will be sharing all parking and concessions proceeds from the event across the 3 Hilliard Music Booster organizations.  The event runs from early morning until after 10pm so we will need to have about 50 volunteers from Darby to cover our allotted spots.  This event has the opportunity to yield as much as $10,000 to support our music programs and your help is invaluable in making it successful.  Students can sign up for shifts in the concession stand, but we would like adults to man parking areas please.  Sign up below!

  • All remaining cash and carry spirit wear items are available for purchase in the Charms online store (payments accepted via PayPal).  This includes “The Bridge” sweatshirts (very limited quantities), long sleeve tees and short sleeve tees.  You can also find most sizes of the men’s gray soft shirt with the band logo (panther head) as well as women’s tank tops. Place your order and it will be ready in no time flat!  What we have in stock is listed!!!!

  • Our shoe drive is here! The collection has begun!  We are collecting gently worn, used and new shoes.  Our shoe drive will run through December 1st. Collection boxes are located in the Darby high school office and the Darby band room.  This is an easy way to earn funds to support the students and support micro-enterprise by becoming inventory for someone learning how to run a business.  Spread the word to your friends, coworkers, family and neighbors!  If you have any questions, please call Paula Hendrix at 614-439-5177.

Senior Night – This Friday

  • Join us for a senior plume ceremony in the Grove at 6pm.

  • Senior dinner provided by the Junior class starts at 4:30.  Junior please arrive at 4:00 to set up. Sign ups for food donations as well as volunteer positions are listed in the sign up genius below.  If you have any questions, please email Michelle Trudeau ( or Joanne Pratt (

  • Senior Parents – please confirm with your students that they completed all necessary information in the form sent by Mr. Kozman.  This included the names of the family members who would be accompanying them at halftime as well as their future plans to be included in that evening’s game program.  They should also have received a yard line assignment so you know where to meet at halftime.

  • We will also be collecting copies of your student’s baby and senior pictures.  Electronic files can be mailed to Liz Hassay at  Hard copies should be put in an envelope clearly marked with your student’s name and gives them to a band representative in the uniform room.  Please turn your pictures in by Friday, November 3rd.
